New Urban Voices at MAKLab

New Urban Voices at MAKLab

Our New Urban Voices project aimed to help groups of young people in Dundee and Angus to influence and lead change in their local communities. A collaboration with Creative Frontline, we paired groups of young people with experienced designers, artists and council workers in an effort to play a part in their changing areas. In Angus, the project continues to focus on the upcoming community campus – what would make it feel more like part of the community, and how it can feel like a valuable resource for the whole community of Forfar and not ‘just a school’.

Last week we brought project participants to the MAKLab digital fabrication studio in Glasgow – pupils from across all year groups of Forfar Academy designed ideas for the campus and brought them to life through model making. They thought about the look and feel of the internal environment – decoration, signage, colour schemes; and, the outdoor spaces on campus – how they might be used for learning, relaxation and welcome. Prototypes were created through laser cutting, laser etching, 3D printing, glue guns and other traditional model making methods and materials. They created some signage for the inside of the building, but mostly focused their efforts on the outdoor spaces, building models of:

Outdoor classrooms
‘Nature-hide’ study rooms with working lights
Water features to highlight all the schools and communities connected to the campus
Play parks for all ages
Viewing decks and work platform
School ‘house’ seating area
Summer houses for socialising and games
Standing stones for a ‘quiet reflective space’
And, new recycling bins for all around the campus

An amazing day was had by all and the team at MAKLab – specifically Delphine, Andrew and Louise – were amazing with the group. It was great to see the young people so quickly making sense of how their designs might come to life in conversations with the MAKlab team, and to see them getting set up and working independently after only brief instructions and guidance on the software.

All of the models created will be exhibited both within the school to other pupils and staff and also in their local community at community engagement and pop–up events in August and beyond.

Alcohol-Related Harm

Alcohol-Related Harm

Previously we worked with pupils at Port Glasgow High School, Inverclyde, to look into the issues that young people in the area face in relation to alcohol misuse and alcohol-related harm. We are onto the second phase of this project now, working with them to implement the ideas they identified with us through youth-led enquiry. The ideas are both school and community focused and include:

  • using social media more effectively to engage with young people
  • designing activities for a local youth club
  • school-based events that can support a dialogue between young people and their parents on alcohol misuse
  • designing and piloting school-based peer support activities for young people
Young people again will be leading these projects.

S1 Discovery Day

S1 Discovery Day

Stevie and Gill recently ran our ‘Skills for Life and Work – S1 Discovery Day’ at Stonelaw High School, designed and facilitated by S1 students. It was an opportunity for S1s to learn more about themselves – the skills and qualities they already have – and to connect these skills and qualities with real life. It was an action packed day with visits from a Campus Police Officer, School Nurse and Active Schools Coordinator who each shared their personal development journey – the skills, strengths and interests they started out with and how they have developed these in different jobs over the course of their career.

Owen Cook of Space Unlimited Interviewed for Kibble Podcast

Our Joint Managing Partner, Owen, was interviewed on the power of having young people and adults work together. Listen to the interview here
Owen discusses his methods and style of working in some detail during the interview. It was great to hear about Space Unlimited’s approach to learning and development. Particularly the way it has changed the lives of young people and adults. Owen’s passion and enthusiasm for the work he does is wonderful. I think it translates to this interview in the most wonderful way.

Changing Schools Together Young People As A Source Of Energy For Change In Education

Friday, March 27, 2015 by richard

On 4th March 2015 we hosted an event to share and learn from our recent Changing Schools Together programme, which ran for two and a half years from 2012 to 2014.

We wanted to bring together young people and teachers from the programme and give them an opportunity to share a rich picture of their experience together with a range of stakeholders who had not been directly involved. Our aim was to support an open dialogue about the learning and implications of the work for people, practice and policy.

It was a lively morning and the big talking points included:

Mutual respect – the young people felt very strongly about why this is important, what it looks like and how it increases confidence. They said that it’s clear people find it easier and safer to talk when mutual respect is explicit.

Keeping momentum going – not exactly a surprise topic and it provoked an interesting discussion about where does the energy come from, the model or process or from the young people involved?  How does the school create space for dialogue? The importance of young people’s natural energy seems like an important asset – in school and beyond!

Embedding change and leaving a legacy – teachers and students wanted to emphasise the importance of the perception of any group of people trying to lead change.  It must be seen to be about real change for students and staff to take it seriously.  Thinking in advance about how to sustain the group as people leave and join (the group and the school!) also helps.

Personal impact – teachers and students talked about increased confidence and skills (for now and later life) and also a sense of being part of the school and feeling listened to.  Relationships between teachers and young people felt less scary with more trust.

We would like to thank everyone involved again for giving up their time and energy to take part.

Exerpt From The Centre For Youth And Criminal Justice Website

Young people explore youth in justice

A report that aims to understand how young people could become active participants in shaping improvements to youth justice policy, practice and research has been published by Scotland’s national centre for youth justice.

The Centre for Youth & Criminal Justice (CYCJ) commissioned social enterprise and charity Space Unlimited to work with a diverse range of young people, engaging them in discussing their experiences, ideas for change based on those experiences, and their thoughts on the shape of an ongoing role for young people like themselves.

The results were then evaluated in the report, entitled ‘Youth in justice: Young people explore what their role in improving youth justice should be’.

Claire Lightowler, Director of CYCJ, said: “At the Centre, a crucial part of our remit is to involve young people in improving youth justice services and supports. We were uncertain of the best way to do this – or if young people would even be interested in being involved. Space Unlimited have done an excellent job of working with these young people, and we have enjoyed being part of this innovative project as it has progressed.

“We were extremely inspired by the young people we met, and their commitment and passion to helping improve things for others. Those involved in this project have often not had the best experience of youth justice services so it’s been humbling to see how much they want to change things for the next generation. We hope that everyone reading the report will feel similarly inspired to bring about change.”

The report focuses on work undertaken with three separate groups of young people, through Action for Children (Moving on Scotland), the West Dunbartonshire Throughcare  service and Aberlour Youth Point in Glasgow, between April and November 2014.

Issues highlighted include frustration at a lack of consistency in service/interactions: “They make you go and meet with someone else who doesn’t know you and who…doesn’t seem that interested because they won’t be working you again anyway” and at feeling judged: “The three of them (on the panel) just sat there judging me…talking about what would happen to me as if I wasn’t even there”.

In the appendix, ‘Stories of change’ show how the project has influenced young people and built their confidence. ‘Brogan’ talks about how her involvement gave her the courage to ask questions of the Children’s Panel, while Shaun Murray, a practitioner with Moving on Scotland, describes how he uses his experiences to help young people achieve their goals – “I’m there to ask the right questions and make the right prompts, helping them to do things for themselves”.

There are also contributions from professionals that work with the young people. Tom Philliben, Senior Operational Manager with the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration (SCRA), praises the work for proving that “young people want to be engaged in developing improvements…they want it to be real and making a difference, not just ‘lip service’”, whilst Police Scotland’s Superintendent Lesley Clark explains why she “found the experience really worthwhile…the formula for this work is innovative and should be commended and developed”.

This report follows on from the ‘Living it: Children, young people and justice’ event, which brought together young people and politicians at the Scottish Parliament, which was jointly organised by CYCJ.

Report author Owen Cook, who is Joint Managing Partner of Space Unlimited, said: “This project pushed Space Unlimited into new territory. As well as everyone we worked with to produce this report, we would like to sincerely thank CYCJ. The Centre’s insights and connections have enabled this project to reach further and deeper than we thought possible, while providing a genuine opportunity for the young people involved to effect change that is meaningful to them.”

Youth-led enquiry – a resource for change in schools

Monday, September 01, 2014 by heather

In January 2012, with the support of Paul Hamlyn Foundation, we embarked on a new programme Changing Schools Together.

Our goal is to help schools and teachers to engage young people as more active partners in the development of their learning experiences. We hoped that our methods of youth-led enquiry could directly benefit participating young people, teachers and schools and at the same time help to build capacity for ongoing collaborative cvhange within the wider education system.

Over the last 2 and a half years, we have been working alongside 358 pupils and 96 teachers in 19 schools – 15 in Scotland and 4 in England – in partnership with Glasgow, South Lanarkshire and City of Edinburgh Councils, Whole Education and Edge Foundation. It’s been quite a journey.

We have just published our impact report – you can download it here – and we think it makes for interesting reading about the way in which young people can be a powerful source of energy for change in schools and the wider education system. In particular, Changing Schools Together has shown that young people can help to change the dialogue about learning which in turn improves relationships and deepens engagement. It has also demonstrated that given the chance, young people are enthusiastic and imaginative designers and facilitators of innovative learning experiences.

In their own words:

“It just felt really respectful. I think that’s why I said things I wouldn’t normally say.” Young Person

“I’ve let go of the idea that you only say what you think to please the teacher.” Young Person

“l was learning with the young people. I noticed them looking at me for answers but I had none to give.” Teacher

“It’s been hard to step back, but it’s been so important that we have.” Teacher

And This Week's Learning Is All About...

And This Week’s Learning Is All About…

Friday, March 21, 2014 by heather

I know it’s a cliche … and a wise person once said to me “things become cliches because they’re true” … so the cliche is that every week there is something new to learn. And this week’s topic has been crowdfunding.

To be truthful, I am riding on Owen’s coat tails here.

Owen has been leading on our New Urban Voices project, working with young people in Dundee and Forfar. It’s all about giving young people the space and support to build a stronger voice in transforming the places where they live and learn. It’s a new initiative, designed and managed in collaboration with Stuart MacDonald of Creative Frontline and we’ve been fortunate to get support and funding from a range of organisations including Creative Scotland, Dundee and Angus councils, Architecture Design Scotland and most recently RSA.

It had always been part of our plan to try crowdfunding for this project and so when RSA chose to offer us some funding as part of a crowdfunding campaign on their new kickstarter platform, that seemed like a timely opportunity.

The campaign has just gone live and you can see it here https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1399773396/new-urban-voices

The video is worth a watch – I know I’m biased but I think Owen has done a fab job with it. And now we’re busy learning how to promote the campaign on social media sites.

As you can probably tell, Owen has done all the hard work – and therefore most of the useful learning 😉 so if this blog prompts any detailed questions and I struggle to answer them, you may just find I pass you on to him …

Selanjutnya, jangan biarkan kekalahan mempengaruhi permainan sbobet88 Anda.

Pertama, perhatikan pola taruhan lawan.
